Most men with spinal cord injury experience some type of erectile dysfunction – difficulty getting or sustaining an erection or inability to achieve full erection – that makes sexual intercourse difficult. Sometimes, erectile function improves over time as spontaneous recovery occurs. In men with injuries at a higher level of the spinal cord, reflexogenic erections can result from sexual or nonsexual stimulation to the genital area or penis. These erections are not necessarily related to sexual arousal, but with practice, couples can sometimes learn stimulation techniques to make these erections last long enough to have satisfactory intercourse. A satisfying sexual relationship may be possible whether you have reflexogenic erections, partial erections, or none at all. But many men and their partners want to have intercourse and may wish to use a treatment technique to create or sustain an erection firm enough for this purpose. Several options now exist, including vacuum devices, injections, medications, and penile implants.A vacuum device, or pump, is a simple tube that fits over the penis and creates an erection as air is pumped out of the tube and blood is drawn into the penis. A ring is then inserted over the base of the penis to maintain the erection by keeping the blood in the penis. After intercourse, the ring is removed and the erection dissipates. (Some people use a penis ring alone to maintain erections that occur naturally. Your urologist can tell you if this method is safe for you and can advise you on how long to use it, what size ring to use, and so forth.) The vacuum devices are generally safe, effective, and inexpensive.

“For the families who have a retarded child with epilepsy, or with cerebral palsy and epilepsy, or a child with some other combination of multiple handicaps, then you may have to define success and failure differently. We often are faced with families with a severely-damaged child who also has seizures. They come to us before they really recognize how damaged the child is and how limited that child will be. The parents will focus on the seizures and the medication and overlook the other underlying problems.”Parents like this will need a lot of support over a long period of time. You can’t just tell them right off, ‘Hey, your child is never going to walk or talk or do anything.’ It is important to give them hope. Everyone needs to maintain some hope. But you have to help them to become realistic, gradually to come to terms with the child’s problems and to accept them. Realistic acceptance, coupled with hope, is the goal I set for these parents.”You have to help them to see and appreciate the small successes every child achieves. These little successes—smiling, responding, turning over, making a sound—may be minimal achievements to you, but they are major achievements to the parent who has waited for them so long. Parents’ reactions to severely-handicapped children like these often will depend on ethnic background and on the social context in which they were raised. There is also a lot of individual variation. It is amazing the reserves of strength that reside deep in many people.”I don’t know how I would respond if I were thrust into the situation that faces many of these parents. And I don’t think anyone knows how he will respond until he actually has to face it. But, somehow, virtually all of them do respond in a positive fashion. Somehow, virtually all of them learn to cope.”What they require most of all is support. They need to realize that they aren’t the only ones who have faced a tragedy. They need support from husband or wife, from grandparents, and from friends. The counselor can be a major source of that support but must also help in finding other community and family sources. I try to make sure that the grandparents are educated about the epilepsy and about the child’s other problems; if grandparents do not understand, they can be very destructive instead of supportive of the family.*232\308\8*

What would happen if you ate no cholesterol at all? Since you have no need for any outside source, your liver and other tissues would simply produce what they needed anyway. However, unless you’re a strict vegetarian you might want to include some animal foods (including nonfat dairy foods) in your meals, because they’re an important source of vitamins D and B12, which are not found in vegetable foods. Also, many of us have developed a taste for such foods, and they add flavor and palatability to our dishes. (If you’re a strict vegetarian, alternate sources of B12 include supplements and some fortified breakfast cereals; vitamin D you can get from the sun.)It’s not hard to ensure that you’re consuming fairly safe levels of cholesterol – just follow the Pritikin Lifetime Eating Plan. And if your serum cholesterol level is too high, you’ve got the best possible chance of lowering it through diet alone simply by enjoying the delicious and versatile menus we offer. Our studies have shown that after three weeks at a Pritikin Longevity Center, the average participant experiences a drop in serum cholesterol of 25 percent. Those who had a beginning cholesterol level in excess of 265 mg/dl had an average drop of 31 percent. This means that on the average, people cut their risk of heart disease by 50 percent; those with a beginning cholesterol level over 265 mg/dl cut their risk by 60 percent or more! Most people whose cholesterol levels are too high and who then adopt the Pritikin program will find a much bigger drop in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol than they could ever hope to achieve with the National Cholesterol Education Program/American Heart Association diet.*14/345/5*

There are many men who ask me what to take as a supplement to prevent cancer in general. This is a difficult question to answer, as we still do not fully understand the workings and intricacies of cancer in many eases. Certainly there are now established links between smoking, exposure to toxic substances ana pesticide sprays, the high consumption of alcohol and cancer. There are also genetic links, especially in relation to prostate cancer and bowel cancer. Long-term stress, obesity, radiation exposure, hormonal imbalance and deficiencies in nutrients have all been linked to cancer too.

There are now active ingredients in certain herbs and foods that have anti-carcinogenic properties. I highly recommend you incorporate them into your diet on a regular basis. It is also wise to take one or more of the following supplements if you have had exposure to the any of the risk factors.

However if you are undergoing chemotherapy treatment, it is advisable not to take any anti-oxidants or anticancer supplements as they exert such a powerful influence that they can actually stop the chemicals from penetrating the cancer. Always check with your doctor or health professional if you’re unsure.

We were recently asked to comment about a lawsuit against a physician who had not prohibited his patient with epilepsy from swimming. The child had drowned, as do a number of children who swim. It was not clear that this child had had a seizure at that time. Thinking about whether your child should be allowed to swim involves asking many of the same questions we asked about bike riding. “How old is the child?” “How frequently does he have seizures?” “How important is swimming?” “How well will he be supervised?” Every child who swims should be supervised. The child whose seizures are not frequent should clearly be well supervised. But, if well-supervised, should he be prohibited from swimming? These individualized decisions will be dependent upon your analysis of the risks and benefits.

Similar questions can be asked about allowing your child to go out and play, stay at another child’s house, climb a tree, go on trips or go to camp, and drive a car.

We permit normal children to take risks. We do not want to shelter a child who has seizures from all risks. Taking risks is part of the growing process. We want simply to shelter that child from the increased risk associated with a seizure recurrence. But this sheltering must be accomplished at an acceptable cost.

A risk factor for cardiovascular disorders occurs when the platelets in the blood aggregate abnormally – they bunch up and stick together. Evening primrose oil is very effective in stopping this process.

The clotting agents in the blood are called platelets. They are called platelets simply because these tiny particles look a bit like plates. When you cut yourself the blood runs out of the open wound for a short while, but then a clot forms to stem the flow. This clot is formed because the platelets stick together, which is an entirely desirable thing for them to do when you suffer a skin wound.

But the problem starts when the platelets start to bunch up and stick together when you haven’t suffered any skin wound. In healthy people, the blood only feels sticky when it begins to clot after a skin wound. While it is coursing round inside you the blood would feel slippery if you could touch it. But the blood inside you should not be sticky. In recent heart attack victims their blood is about 4 1/2 times stickier than in normal people. If you looked at their blood under a microscope you would see platelets sticking to each other and to artery walls.

When platelets stick to cholesterol deposits this quickly leads to a clot, which can block the flow of blood. When a blood clot forms in an artery or a vein, it’s called a thrombosis. This blocks the circulation in the area. A clot in a coronary artery is a coronary thrombosis. In the brain ifs a stroke.

Normally, artery walls make prostacyclin which prevents platelets from sticking to each other or to artery walls. But arteries which are damaged by fat and cholesterol deposits, high blood pressure or injury, don’t make enough prostacyclin.

Evening primrose oil helps because the GLA in evening primrose oil easily converts to DGLA, which is known to be able to reduce platelet aggregation. If the platelets can stop clumping together, the risk of thrombosis is reduced. Also, evening primrose oil converts to prostaglandin El, and PGE1 is one of the most potent known inhibitors of platelet aggregation.

This is really a case of do the best you can, because you cannot control everything. Use filtered water to reduce your intake of chlorine and lead by using either an under-the-sink filter or a simple jug filter.

Buy organic vegetables and grains where possible to eliminate your intake of pesticides. Also try to avoid using pesticides yourself in the garden and see if you can find other more environmentally friendly ways to control pests, such as putting certain plants together.

Take a look at the cosmetic, toiletries and deodorants you use and try to buy those which contain the most natural ingredients. Even though products may include only small amounts of chemicals, it is the cumulative and cocktail effect which may cause problems. Many deodorants contain aluminum, a heavy toxic metal, so buy an aluminum-free one from a health food shop. Ask for white fillings instead of mercury amalgams at the dentist.

Use products with the least amount of chemicals in to clean your house and your clothes so that you are not filling your home environment with unwanted toxins.

Try to buy fruit and vegetables loose so that they are not wrapped tightly in plastic. At home avoid using cling film and storing food for long periods in plastic containers. In the fridge you can just use glass dishes with lids to store food. You are not going to be able to avoid all your food coming into contact with plastic because that is the nature of our society. Just do the best you can where it is in your control.

Women often feel helpless in the face of what appears to be a rising tide of breast cancer. As we get older more of our friends and relatives seem to become victims. But I hope I have shown that there is a great deal that you can do in terms of prevention, both for yourself and your daughters. The major research studies on the subject reveal that diet is absolutely crucial, that what we eat is as important as what we avoid. It lies within the power of all of us to use what is already known in our own daily lives. We can do something positive and we should.

Viruses are the smallest of the pathogens, being approximately l/500th the size of bacteria. Because of their tiny size, they are visible only under an electron microscope and were therefore not identified until this century. By the 1960s, viruses were being effectively grown outside the body in tissue cultures.

At present, over 150 viruses are known to cause diseases in humans. The role of viruses in the development of various cancers and chronic diseases is still unclear. In fact, much remains to be learned about viruses, perhaps the most unusual of all the microorganisms that infect humans.

Essentially, a virus consists of a protein structure that contains either ribonucleic acid (RNA) or deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). It is incapable of carrying out the normal cell functions of respiration and metabolism. It cannot reproduce on its own and can exist only in a parasitic relationship with the cell it invades. In fact some scientists question whether viruses should be considered living organisms.

When viruses attach themselves to host cells, they inject their own RNA or DNA, causing the host cells to begin reproducing new viruses. Once they take control of a cell, these new viruses overrun it until, filled to capacity, the cell bursts, putting thousands of new viruses into circulation to begin the process of cell invasion and reproduction all over again.

Because viruses cannot reproduce outside living cells, they are especially difficult to culture in a laboratory, making detection and study of these organisms extremely time-consuming. Treatment of viral diseases is also difficult because many viruses can withstand heat, formaldehyde, and large doses of radiation with little effect on their structure. In addition, some viruses may have incubation periods (the length of time required to develop fully and therefore to cause symptoms in their hosts) that are measured in years rather than hours or days. Termed slow-acting viruses, these viruses infect the host and remain in a semidormant state for years, causing a slowly developing illness. HIV is the most recent deadly example of a slow-acting virus.

Drug treatment for viral infections is limited. Drugs powerful enough to kill viruses also kill the host cells, although some available drugs block stages in viral reproduction without damaging the host cells.

We have another form of virus protection within our own bodies. When exposed to certain viruses, the body begins to produce a protein substance known as interferon. Interferon does not destroy the invading microorganisms but sets up a protective mechanism to aid healthy cells in their struggle against the invaders. Although interferon research is promising, it should be noted that not all viruses stimulate interferon production.
